If you make normal choices, expect normal results
I love the visual of the normal distribution curve, because I can hold it up to my high-achieving clients and remind them - do you want to revert to the mean (and do what everyone else is doing) or do you want to outperform and be on the tail?
Here are 3 of the ‘not-normal’ choices that separate the exceptional from the average.
1. Confidence vs. comfort: normal high performers stay in the comfort of self-doubt rationalized as humility. Out-performers choose confidence over comfort and do not fear perceived arrogance.
The secret: you can believe in yourself and be humble.
2. Essential vs. balance: normal high performers think about about balancing time and priorities. Out-performers know that impact isn’t created by time spent, it’s generated by how you show up - sustaining perspective, clarity and energy.
The secret: Jeff Bezos says he prioritizes sleeping 8 hours a night because he doesn’t need to make more decisions every day, he needs to make better decisions. Meditation, sleep, nurturing relationships and exercise aren't the tradeoff or future rewards; they're today's necessities.
3. Trust vs. control: normal high performers fixate on metrics and results because control feels good. It minimizes downside risk and validates ones worth. Out-performers don't chase metrics; they chase missions and upside and let go of the illusion of control.
The secret: Be the definer not the defined by. Self-worth isn't a number or result—it's an inherent trust in oneself and the mission.
